Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has announced plans to open a new boutique resort on Roatán Island’s West Bay Beach in early 2021. The move marks the company’s first resort in Roatán, Honduras, and its third in the Caribbean, joining the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa in Grand Cayman, which opened in November 2016, and the Kimpton Kawana Bay Resort in Grenada, which is set to open in late 2020.
The new Kimpton Roatán will be the product of a renovation of the existing Grand Roatán Resort, and it will mark the first internationally branded hospitality offering on the island, Kimpton said. Helmed by Caribbean architects Lane Pettigrew Associates, plans call for the property to have nearly 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meetings and events space.
Additionally, renovations to the Grand Roatán will expand the resort's accommodations to 126 guest rooms, including 43 one- and two-bedrooms suites and one Presidential suite. Other amenities will include a rooftop sky bar with a glass-fronted pool, a large outdoor pool, a chef-driven restaurant, lounge and beach bars, a fitness center, a spa and water sports facilities.
The largest of Honduras’s Caribbean Bay Islands, Roatán sits atop the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world. The Kimpton Roatán will aim to celebrate the island’s culture through artwork in the spa that incorporates artifacts of the indigenous Paya peoples loaned from the national museum, as well as a sustainability-driven infrastructure incorporating solar technologies, on-site water desalination and other eco-friendly touches.
