With climate-neutral excursion activities, hotels with sustainable certification, short distances and an efficient public transportation network, Zurich offers an ideal setting to host sustainable events. The Swiss city is ranked eighth on the Global Destination Sustainability Index 2021 and second in the Smart City Ranking 2021.
Many of Zurich’s top events venues and hotels have been granted certification for their commitment to sustainability. From the Zurich Convention Center and the Hallenstadion Zurich to iconic hotels, including the Dolder Grand, the Baur au Lac and the Hotel Storchen, offer meeting planners eco-friendly options in various configurations at a range of budgets.
The Zurich Tourism Convention Bureau works in tandem with convention, meeting and event planners, taking into account such values of environmental friendliness, economic efficiency and fair working conditions. In addition to the venues and facilities, there are also a range of “sustainable social programs” on offer for planners to organize an environmentally and culturally friendly supplemental program for their convention attendees. Be it a “Taste the Waste” cooking course, a tour of the city by stand-up paddleboard, urban gardening and bee workshops, or team building activities in electric cars, motorcycles and quads, Zurich offers a comprehensive set of programs to complement any sustainable event.
Centrally located in Europe, Zurich Airport has reduced its CO2 emissions by half over the past 25 years and aims to reach zero emissions by 2040. As part of this initiative, the airport is switching to electric vehicles, renovating its buildings to make them more energy-efficient and protecting the green spaces between runways. Besides, the Swiss Federal Railways (by which visitors can reach the center of Zurich from the airport in just 10 minutes) run on 90 percent hydropower. By 2025, its trains will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy sources.
