More big news in sustainable events: Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced that it will eliminate all single-use plastic across its entire portfolio of luxury hotels by March 2021.
The company said that the campaign to eliminate single-use plastics has been underway at select properties for some time now. Mandarin Oriental worked to identify 23 of the most common items of single-use plastic currently in use across the portfolio; to date, 86 percent of these initial items have been eliminated or are in the process of being phased out in all hotels.
Currently, Mandarin Oriental is testing concepts and inviting colleagues from every hotel to find solutions which can then be shared as best practice internally. The company is also collaborating with its suppliers to drive responsible procurement and provide alternative products that are both viable and suitable for the luxury hotel environment.
As part of the process, Mandarin Oriental said it has set clearly defined annual goals for each of its hotels to address these issues. The company will issue progress reports every six months highlighting both their achievements and any difficulties encountered. Mandarin Oriental said it will public the first report at the end of March 2020.
As a supporter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Mandarin Oriental said it is committed to contributing to the communities in which it operates and responsibly managing its environmental impact and social commitment.
